Canelo to fight for WBC cruiserweight title in May 2022
Boxing fans won't have to wait long to see Canelo Alvarez in action once again.
The World Boxing Council approved a fight between the undisputed super middleweight champion and the organization's cruiserweight titleholder, Ilunga Makabu, according to ESPN Ringside.
The bout is expected to take place in May 2022, according to Canelo's team.
Canelo recently became the first boxer in history to claim the title of undisputed champion at super middleweight when he captured the IBF strap from Caleb Plant with an 11th-round TKO on Nov. 6.
The 31-year-old Mexican owns a 57-1-2 record in his professional fighting career, with his lone loss coming to Floyd Mayweather Jr. in 2013.
Canelo is widely considered the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world.
Makabu is a 34-year-old southpaw out of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. He's held the WBC cruiserweight strap since January 2020 when he defeated Michal Cieslak to secure the vacant title. He has one title defense since, beating Nigerian fighter Olanrewaju Durodola in December 2020.
Makabu owns a 28-2 professional record.
