Canelo-Golovkin trilogy bout finalized for Sept. 17

Boxing stars Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin are running it back for a third time.

Alvarez will defend his WBA, WBC, IBF, and WBO super middleweight titles against Golovkin on Sept. 17, Alvarez's promoter Matchroom Boxing announced Tuesday.

Alvarez revealed Monday he planned to put a rematch with Dmitry Bivol on hold in favor of a matchup with Golovkin.

The 31-year-old is coming off just the second loss of his professional career, a unanimous decision to Bivol in a WBA light heavyweight title bout earlier in May. Alvarez, who entered that fight as the No. 1-ranked pound-for-pound boxer, hadn't fallen short since facing Floyd Mayweather in 2013.

Golovkin, 40, will be competing at super middleweight for the first time in his career. He currently holds the WBA, IBF, and IBO middleweight belts and is riding a four-fight winning streak.

Alvarez and Golovkin first met in 2017 and fought to a split draw. Alvarez beat Golovkin by majority decision in a rematch almost exactly one year later to claim the WBA, WBC, and The Ring middleweight titles.

A location for the trilogy bout, which will be available on DAZN pay-per-view, has not yet been announced.
