Report: Inoue-Tapales undisputed title fight targeted for Dec. 26
Japanese star Naoya Inoue is looking to go undisputed in a second weight class.
An undisputed junior featherweight title fight between Inoue and Marlon Tapales is in the works for Dec. 26 in Tokyo, sources told ESPN's Mike Coppinger.
Tapales' manager, Sean Gibbons, revealed that plans were in place for the matchup Thursday at the WBO convention in the Dominican Republic.
Inoue will put his WBC and WBO titles up for grabs, while Tapales will put his WBA and IBF belts on the line.
Inoue, who used to be the undisputed bantamweight champion, moved up to 122 pounds in July and knocked out Stephen Fulton in the eighth round to win his two 122-pound titles. One of the top pound-for-pound fighters in the sport, Inoue has been a champion in four different divisions.
"The Monster" claimed undisputed gold at 118 pounds last December with an 11th-round stoppage of Paul Butler. Inoue is 25-0 as a professional with 22 knockouts.
Tapales beat Murodjon Akhmadaliev by split decision in April to become a unified junior featherweight champion. The Filipino fighter holds a 37-3 pro record and is a former WBO bantamweight titleholder.
