Ryan Garcia misses weight for Haney fight

Ryan Garcia failed to make weight for Saturday's anticipated title fight against Devin Haney.

Garcia reportedly tipped the scales at 143.2 pounds, more than three pounds over the 140-pound limit, according to journalist Dan Rafael.

Golden Boy Promotions said the sides reached a deal for the fight to proceed as planned Saturday, according to Brian Campbell of CBS Sports. However, Garcia will be ineligible to claim Haney's WBC junior welterweight belt if he wins. A Haney loss would vacate the WBC's 140-pound title, according to ESPN's Mike Coppinger.

Garcia agreed to forfeit more than $600,000 of his total purse to Haney in exchange for the fight proceeding, sources told Coppinger. The 25-year-old made no attempt to lose the extra pounds after he missed weight, Coppinger added.

Because Garcia missed weight by such a large margin, there will be no additional pre-fight weight check Saturday, sources told Rafael.

At a press conference Thursday, Garcia agreed to a bet of $500,000 per pound with Haney if he failed to make weight. Both Golden Boy and Haney confirmed that Garcia will honor the wager.

However, the new deal includes 2% of Garcia's pay-per-view upside and not the $1.5 million from the bet, Rafael reports.

Garcia seemed to be nonplussed by the developments, tweeting that being three pounds overweight "is nothing" and saying people should "stop crying."

The lead-up to Saturday's fight at Barclays Center has been full of mayhem. The bitter rivals got into a spat atop the Empire State Building on Tuesday; hours later, the New York Mets nixed plans to have Garcia and Haney throw ceremonial first pitches at Citi Field over concerns of an on-field incident.

The pugilists were barely able to be kept apart during a tense final faceoff Friday afternoon.

Garcia and Haney will meet for the first time as professionals Saturday. However, they have a long and bitter history, having each won three of their six meetings during their amateur careers.
