Boxing star Ryan Garcia has been suspended one year by the New York State Athletic Commission (NYSAC), and his win over Devin Haney was overturned to a no-contest following two positive drug tests, the commission told ESPN's Mike Coppinger on Thursday.

Garcia reached a settlement with the NYSAC to avoid a hearing. Additionally, he forfeits his disclosed $1.2 million purse to Golden Boy Promotions and has been fined $10,000 by the NYSAC.

Garcia tested positive for the performance-enhancing drug ostarine in two drug tests related to his April 20 fight against WBC junior welterweight champion Haney in Brooklyn. Garcia defeated Haney via decision in a major upset.

Garcia's suspension is retroactive to April 20. He must undergo additional drug testing and provide clean samples through April 20, 2025, for the ban to be lifted, according to Ring Magazine's Jake Donovan.

Since the failed drug tests came to light in early May, Garcia has maintained his innocence.

"Ryan Garcia was a victim of substance contamination, with levels measured in the billions and trillions of a gram, which provided no advantage whatsoever," a statement from Garcia's camp read Thursday.

"For many years, Ryan has voluntarily submitted to random testing, even during out-of-competition periods, and has never had any issues," the team added.

Haney told Coppinger he's glad he got "justice" for Garcia's positive tests.

"I want to thank the commission and the fans who stood by me during this whole process," Haney said. "The facts are the facts, and I wasn't on an even playing field. … It's all part of my story, and it's only going to make me better."

He added: "I'm a clean athlete, and boxing is a brutal sport where one fight can literally change your life. I think it important for fighters to be clean and I want to become an advocate for clean athletes for my experience in this situation."

Garcia, 25, said Wednesday that he was "officially retired" from boxing.

"They took my victory away," Garcia posted Thursday on X after news of his suspension broke. He added: "It's okay, I'm retired, I'll come back in a year."

Garcia has been mired in controversy for several months. He displayed erratic behavior on social media leading up to the Haney fight and then missed weight, making him ineligible to capture Haney's WBC 140-pound title with a victory.

Then, Garcia was arrested for felony vandalism June 8 at a Beverly Hills hotel.

Before his win over Haney was overturned, it was considered one of the biggest upsets of the year. Garcia dropped Haney three times en route to a stunning majority-decision victory. Garcia now holds a career record of 24-1 (1 NC).

Haney is once again undefeated after initially suffering the first loss of his professional career against Garcia. The 25-year-old is 31-0 (1 NC).

Earlier this week, Top Rank won the rights to hold a fight between Haney and Sandor Martin next, but the two sides have yet to agree to the matchup.
