David Benavidez to face David Morrell in light heavyweight title fight
David Benavidez announced Tuesday that he will defend his WBC interim light heavyweight title against David Morrell.
Full details of the bout have yet to be announced, but Benavidez and Morrell are expected to square off on Jan. 25 in Las Vegas, sources told ESPN's Mike Coppinger. The fight will headline a PBC pay-per-view card.
Benavidez moved up to light heavyweight last year after his repeated overtures to Canelo Álvarez went unanswered. He won the WBC's interim belt in his first fight at 175 pounds this past June with a unanimous victory over Oleksandr Gvozdyk.
The 27-year-old, who previously won titles at 168 pounds, owns a 29-0 professional record with 24 wins via knockout.
Morrell, 26, is also relatively new to light heavyweight, having moved up to the weight class earlier this year. The Cuban southpaw is 11-0 with nine KOs as a professional. His most recent victory, a unanimous decision over Radivoje Kalajdzic on Aug. 3, earned Morrell the WBA's vacant "regular" light heavyweight belt.
