Schalke has threatened to pull Leroy Sane from the transfer market if it doesn't receive a suitable offer from Manchester City by noon on Monday.
As the Bundesliga outfit prepares to fly to Austria on Tuesday for a preseason friendly against Bologna, sporting director Christian Heidel issued a warning to City counterpart Txiki Begiristain.
"Either (City) agree or they don't," Heidel told Kicker, according to Rob Pollard of the Manchester Evening News. "If Leroy Sane travels with us on the plane to Austria, he stays."
In the end, it appears to be nothing more than a negotiating tactic on behalf of Schalke - and it may not even matter. Sky Sports, citing colleagues in Germany, understands Sane is currently in Manchester to finalise a move worth more than £30 million.
Schalke initially set its asking price at a fee above £40 million.
Sane has long been linked with City, and the 20-year-old informed Schalke this summer that he wants to leave.
Manager Pep Guardiola confirmed City's interest in Sane last week, although he offered little more than that.
"Sane is a player from Schalke. If he comes, we'll be happy. If he stays, I'll be happy for the Schalke fans," said the Spaniard.
City's approach for Everton centre-back John Stones has reached a similar standstill. Begiristain doesn't appear willing to increase his club's offer to meet Everton's £50-million valuation of the player.
