Bayern clinches 6th Bundesliga crown on the bounce with Augsburg win

Six in a row is the charm.

In what was merely a formality at this point in the season, Bundesliga titan Bayern Munich officially secured its sixth consecutive league title Saturday, knocking off mid-table side FC Augsburg 4-1 to mathematically clinch the championship. The win gives Bayern 72 points in the league table, 20 points ahead of trailing FC Schalke 04, who can now only close the gap to two points in an absolute best-case scenario.

Bayern's latest league conquest - the 28th in club history - also places the team in the German record books, as no other Bundesliga side has ever won six straight league titles. The German outfit last failed to secure the Bundesliga in 2011-12 when they finished runner-up to Borussia Dortmund.

The victory didn't come easy at first, however. Augsburg shocked its Bavarian neighbour in the 18th minute when an unfortunate bounce cost centre-back Niklas Sule an own goal to open the scoring.

Goals from Corentin Tolisso, James Rodriguez, Arjen Robben, and Sandro Wagner cancelled out Sule's unlucky opener.

With the Bundesliga secure, Bayern can now shift its focus entirely on the Champions League where it will host Spanish outfit Sevilla on Wednesday in the second leg of their quarter-final. Bayern currently leads 2-1 on aggregate.
