Bayern Munich secure domestic double with DFB-Pokal title
Add another trophy to the pile for Bayern Munich.
A Robert Lewandowski brace and a sweet Kingsley Coman strike clinched a 3-0 victory over RB Leipzig in the DFB-Pokal final and sealed a domestic double for the Bavarian side.
Saturday's win comes one week after Niko Kovac's men secured their seventh consecutive Bundesliga title and gives the bench boss his second straight cup triumph; Kovac hoisted the trophy with Eintracht Frankfurt last season after beating ... Bayern Munich.
The win gives Bayern their 19th DFB-Pokal title, extending their own record.
Though the scoreline ultimately looked comfortable, Bayern were made to sweat for much of the encounter. Leipzig looked the more likely to find the net for large stretches of the match, and only an impenetrable Manuel Neuer kept them at bay. The veteran shot-stopper, returning from a calf injury to make his first appearance since April, pulled off a pair of outstanding saves on either side of the halftime interval.
Only late goals from Coman and Lewandowski cemented a result that long looked to be in the balance.
The back-and-forth contest at the Olympic Stadium also served as a farewell for Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery. The two Bayern Munich icons, leaving the Allianz Arena this summer after trophy-laden spells in Bavaria, came off the bench to make their final appearances for the club.
