Report: Arsenal targeting RB Leipzig defender Upamecano
RB Leipzig center-back Dayot Upamecano is apparently of interest to Arsenal, as Raphael Honigstein of ESPN FC reported the north London side is targeting the 20-year-old.
The Premier League outfit has reportedly not yet launched an official bid, but it's believed Leipzig are aware of Arsenal's interest in signing Upamecano, who featured in 16 matches to help the German club finish the season with the best defensive record in the Bundesliga.
However, Honigstein suggested Arsenal could struggle to meet Leipzig's asking price for the defender despite his inexperience. And the Gunners could face an even bigger struggle to sign Upamecano if they fail to secure a Champions League berth by beating Chelsea in Wednesday's Europa League final.
Meanwhile, Leipzip are apparently attempting to sign Upamecano to a new contract beyond 2021 when his current deal expires. However, the youngster could force the team into a transfer if he's intrigued by a move away from Red Bull Arena.
The French footballer began his career in Valenciennes FC's youth system before moving to Austria where he played for Red Bull Salzburg. Upamecano was then sold to Leipzig in July 2018 for a reported €10-million fee.
