Report: Deal for Sancho would've cost United close to €250M
Manchester United abandoned their summer-long pursuit of Borussia Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho once they realized the deal would've cost them nearly €250 million (£227 million) in total, The Guardian's Jamie Jackson reports.
Dortmund insisted that Sancho wouldn't be sold for anything less than €120 million (£108 million), but United reportedly felt the German club's asking price, along with the competitive salary and commission they'd have to pay the 20-year-old and his agent, respectively, wasn't viable in the current economic climate.
In May, chairman Ed Woodward said the club was facing one of the "most extraordinary and testing periods" in its 142-year history because of the coronavirus pandemic. With stadiums still closed to fans and broadcast revenue affected, United are likely to lose more than £100 million due to the ongoing health crisis.
United managed to do some business before the end of the transfer window, signing Edinson Cavani on a free transfer, left-back Alex Telles for a reported €15 million, and 18-year-old Amad Traore on a deal worth as much as €41 million.
Earlier in the window, the Red Devils completed a €39-million transaction for Dutch midfielder Donny van de Beek.
In all, United spent nearly €85 million in transfer fees, the sixth-most of any team in the Premier League, according to transfermarkt.com.
