Wirtz makes German history with opening goal of Euro 2024

Florian Wirtz didn't waste any time making good on the suggestions that he would be one of the brightest young stars to grace Euro 2024.

The German midfielder scored the first goal of this summer's tournament, finding the net just 10 minutes into the opening match against Scotland on Friday. In doing so, Wirtz, at 21 years and 42 days old, became the youngest German man to score at the European Championship, breaking the previous mark set by teammate Kai Havertz.

Wirtz, who smacked a low first-time shot into the bottom corner that Scottish goalkeeper Angus Gunn could only redirect off the post and in, is also the youngest player to ever score the first goal of a European Championship.

Fellow 21-year-old Jamal Musiala, who forms an exciting duo with Wirtz as the creative heartbeat of Julian Nagelsmann's team, also got in on the action, doubling the host nation's lead nine minutes later in Munich.

Nagelsmann himself also entered the record books Friday, keeping with the theme and becoming the youngest-ever coach at the Euros at 36 years and 327 days old. He eclipsed the previous mark set by Slovenian bench boss Srecko Katanec.

Germany went on to claim a 5-1 in the tournament opener.
