Koo, who spent part of both the 2012-13 Bundesliga season and the 2013-14 Bundesliga season on loan at Augsburg, joined Mainz in January 2014. He subsequently featured at last year's World Cup, where he appeared in all three of South Korea's group-stage matches before the national team was eliminated.
At Augsburg, Koo will have the chance to feature in the Europa League, as the club was placed in Group L alongside Athletic Bilbao, AZ Alkmaar, and Partizan.
