Bethel-Thompson leaving CFL, joining USFL's Breakers for 2023
Former Toronto Argonauts quarterback McLeod Bethel-Thompson won't play in the CFL in 2023 and is signing a deal to play for the New Orleans Breakers of the USFL, he confirmed Wednesday.
Bethel-Thompson posted a thread of messages on social media, thanking fans and the league.
"I came to you (CFL) dealing with the pain of a dream deferred," Bethel-Thompson said. "I was at a moment in my life where I felt I had self-sabotaged my childhood dream away by losing sight of why I played the game. For five years, you tested me, challenged me, battered me, doubted me, cheered me, healed me, strengthened me, crowned me, and freed me. Through that process, you rejuvenated my soul and I will forever be grateful."
Bethel-Thompson led the Argonauts to the Grey Cup in 2022, throwing for 4,731 yards, 23 touchdowns, and 15 interceptions. He dislocated his thumb during the CFL championship and exited the contest early. Chad Kelly replaced Bethel-Thompson, leading the Argonauts to their 18th Grey Cup victory.
"My next journey begins with the New Orleans Breakers of the USFL and then will continue with considerable NFL interest in the fall," Bethel Thompson said. "I do not want this decision in any way seen as a dismissal of the CFL. I love the CFL and hold it in the highest regard."
Bethel-Thompson won two Grey Cups with the Argonauts between 2017-22. He threw for 13,261 yards, 70 touchdowns, and 49 interceptions in 79 career CFL games.
