Gianluigi Buffon had never received a red card in any of his previous 116 Champions League appearances, but referee Michael Oliver's decision to award Real Madrid a penalty deep into second-half stoppage time Wednesday forced the Juventus goalkeeper's hand.

Buffon, who likely played for the last time in the competition, was dismissed at the Santiago Bernabeu after vehemently protesting the call in Oliver's face. It was a similar sequence to Zinedine Zidane's moment of madness in the 2006 World Cup, when the Frenchman was sent off in his final career outing against Buffon's Italy.
This time, Zidane stood on the sidelines and watched as Cristiano Ronaldo converted past substitute Wojciech Szczesny to give Madrid a narrow 4-3 win on aggregate.
