Arsenal lodge complaint to UEFA over bottle thrown at Arsene Wenger during Besiktas match
A trip to Turkey can be hellish for traveling clubs. Few environments in Europe are as intimidating and visiting sides are often forced to deal with hostile supporters from the moment they arrive at the airport until the moment they leave the country.
With that in mind, it probably shouldn't come as a huge surprise that after the final whistle of Tuesday's 0-0 draw between Besiktas and Arsenal, a bottle was flung at Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger as he was exiting the pitch.
"As I left the pitch a bottle or something was thrown at me," Wenger said. "I reported the incident to UEFA."
Any sanctions that UEFA choose to impose will continue Besiktas' long history of facing disciplinary action. They were banned from last season's Europa League over domestic match-fixing allegations, and in September, they were ordered to play four matches behind closed doors after hundreds of fans participated in a pitch invasion against Galatasaray that brought the match to a halt.
Tuesday's incident marred what was otherwise a phenomenal atmosphere at the Ataturk Olympic Stadium, where 41,531 supporters were in attendance.
