Luke Shaw to stay in Eindhoven following leg operation

Luke Shaw's road to recovery has begun after undergoing an operation on the broken leg he suffered during Manchester United's Champions League loss to PSV Eindhoven.

The Premier League club announced that the procedure was complete Tuesday night in an Eindhoven hospital and said the 20-year-old will remain in the Dutch city during the early stages of his rehabilitation process.

Although Manchester United did not announce a timetable for Shaw's return, Jamie Jackson of The Guardian reports that the defender could be sidelined for up to six months as the medical staff at the Saint Anna Ziekenhuis hospital in Eindhoven described his injury as a clean break.

"Manchester United are grateful for the excellent care he is receiving and would like to thank everyone who has sent messages of support," United said in a statement.

Manager Louis van Gaal was visibly worried about his left-back in the moments after the incident with PSV defender Hector Moreno. The Dutch boss walked over to offer his support to Shaw when the English international was taken off on a stretcher, holding an oxygen mask over his face.

"It is awful - a boy who comes to Manchester United at 18, has it very difficult and then plays fantastically and then this happens. When he was in the dressing room he had an oxygen mask on. He was crying," Van Gaal said afterwards.
