Brazil eliminated from Copa America Centenario due to Peru's hand-ball goal
The Copa America Centenario will be contested without the familiar yellow-and-blue of Brazil, as the beloved South American favourite was eliminated from the competition due to a hand-ball goal scored by Peru in the final match of Group B.
As a result, Peru joins Ecuador as one of the two teams advancing to the quarter-final stage of the competition, with Dunga's side left reeling after being on the receiving end of a tough decision by referee Andres Cunha.
Peruvian midfielder Raul Ruidiaz scored the improbable, controversial game-winner with about 15 minutes remaining in the match, punching the ball into an empty net after positioning himself well on a cross from the right-hand side.
Brazil goalkeeper Alisson and captain Miranda immediately protested the goal, having seen Ruidiaz deliberately use his arm to score from up close, but the referees did not get a clear look at the decision and deliberated for several minutes before giving an uncertain, yet definitive call.
Peru celebrated its historic win - the first over Brazil in 31 years - without remorse and held firm for the remainder of the match, limiting the Selecao to a handful of chances, none particularly dangerous.
In the end, Peru took all three points and finished top of Group B; Los Incas will meet Colombia in the quarter-finals.
