Mexico head coach Juan Carlos Osorio asked fans of El Tri for forgiveness following a brutal ouster at the hands of titleholder Chile in the Copa America Centenario quarter-finals.

An emphatic 7-0 loss tells the story of Mexico's heartbreak in the competition, ousted at Levi's Stadium in front of a record crowd of 70,547. It marks the worst-ever result in Mexico's history in tournament competition and it's a loss that left Osorio hurting.

"First, I'd like to offer my most heartfelt apologies to the Mexican fans," Osorio said in a postgame news conference, according to The Associated Press. "Today was a shameful presentation, an accident that happens in soccer.

"Obviously, there are bigger tragedies, but speaking in terms of sports, today was a very, very poor showing on our part. I repeat my apologies to all the people and fans."

It seems a sudden jolt in the opposite direction for Osorio's team which had previously extended its unbeaten streak to 22 matches with comfortable results in the group stage of the competition.

But, against Chile, Osorio's team fell well and truly apart.

"I assume and accept all responsibility for this defeat," Osorio answered, adding he is not planning on stepping down from the post.
