Edinson Cavani apologises for calling Jamaica an African team: 'I have compared two similar styles'

Geography is not Edinson Cavani's strong suit.

Speaking ahead of Uruguay's Copa America fixture versus invitees Jamaica, Cavani claimed: "As any other African team, Jamaica are going to be strong."

Of course, Jamaica is located in the Carribbean - separated from Africa by the Atlantic Ocean.

The mix-up inevitably led to an overreaction from those who took offense to the comment, prompting Cavani to issue a public apology on Twitter in which he wrote:

"First of all, I want to apologize to Jamaica and its people.

"In my mind, I have compared two similar styles and characteristics of the game between your team and other African teams but the truth is that I have expressed half of my reasoning and it went out bad and been perceived quite wrong.

"My deepest public apologies and I hope it will be taken with humor and not as an offense."

Uruguay and Jamaica will meet Saturday at the Estadio Regional Calvo y Bascunan in Antofagasta, Chile.
