Repeat of 2011: Paraguay defeats Brazil on penalties at Copa America

Jorge Adorno / Reuters

When Brazil and Paraguay met at the last edition of the Copa America in 2011, it proved to be one of the most suicidal shootouts ever witnessed in international football. The Selecao's first four shooters - Elano, Thiago Silva, Andre Santos, Fred - all failed to convert their shots, and La Albirroja were gifted a place in the semifinals of the competition.

Some things never change.

Following 90 minutes of entertaining football at the Estadio Municipal Alcaldesa Ester Roa Rebolledo on Saturday, the scoreboard read 1-1. And since extra time is non-existent at the Copa America until the final, a penalty shootout would once again determine which of the two national teams snatched a place in the competition's final four.

Sure enough, Everton Ribeiro, who had replaced Robinho moments before the final whistle in order to take a penalty, fired his shot wide of the far post, and Douglas Costa then skied his attempt over the crossbar, paving the way for Derlis Gonzalez to beat Jefferson and secure Paraguay's second consecutive appearance in the semifinals of the Copa America.

Here's what you need to know from the match that will be giving the Brazilian population nightmares on Saturday night:

The Goals

15th minute - Robinho, Brazil: Eight years ago, Robinho had the world at his feet when he guided Brazil to its eighth Copa America title. He was 23 years old, playing at Real Madrid, and the subject of comparisons to Pele. Although his career never lived up to its initial hype, Robinho, now 31, is making the most of his inclusion in Brazil's starting XI and scored his 28th international goal to give the Selecao an early lead.

72nd minute - Derlis Gonzalez, Paraguay: Just when it looked like Paraguay was going to be unable to beat Jefferson, La Albirroja were handed a lifeline when Thiago Silva inexplicably dangled his right arm in the air and controlled the ball with his hand while going up for an aerial duel against Roque Santa Cruz. Up stepped Derlis Gonzalez to level the score.

Man of the Match - Derlis Gonzalez

Entering the Copa America, there were doubts over just how much playing time Derlis Gonzalez would receive under manager Ramon Diaz, who many believed would opt for experience over youth.

There can now be no argument over whether or not he belongs in Paraguay's starting XI.

Not only did the Gonzalez convert two penalties, including the one that clinched victory for La Albirroja, but he caused endless problems for Brazil on the right flank and showed remarkable composure for a player who is only 21 years old.

Stray Thoughts

  • One can only wonder how Brazil would have performed if Neymar had been able to play.
  • Brazil really didn't deserve to progress past the quarterfinals. The Selecao entered the Copa America having won all 10 of its last 10 friendlies, scoring 21 goals in that span while only conceding two. All that is now meaningless following a disastrous showing at the competition and Dunga will surely be worried as he prepares for the upcoming qualifying campaign for the 2018 World Cup.
  • Other South American national teams might want to take notes from Paraguay regarding how to contain Brazil at the Copa America.
  • Paraguay deserve a pat on the back. Next to nothing was expected of La Albirroja going into the Copa America and they've surpassed all expectations by stringing together four solid performances.
