Manuel Neuer expects to begin light training next week with eyes on World Cup
Manuel Neuer is optimistic about his chances of featuring for Bayern Munich again this season after spending several months on the sidelines with a hairline fracture in his left foot.
The German international initially injured his metatarsal in March 2017, and his comeback lasted just seven games before he suffered a repeat of the issue in September.
Although there's no timetable for his return, Neuer said it was "realistic" he'll be back before the Bundesliga season concludes in May, as he attempts to get some minutes under his belt before Germany defends its title at the World Cup in Russia this summer.
"I think I'll be able to run out on the training ground next week," Neuer told FC Bayern.tv, as translated by ESPN FC. "At least I will finally be outdoors. It would be very important because it would mean I will go to the World Cup having already played some games in the Bundesliga, so I will be in better shape.
"However, it's very difficult to name a time. I have to complete the rehabilitation in the best possible way. Obviously, you get impatient. Athletes are very ambitious and it hurts when you're an onlooker for a long time."
With his long-term health in mind, the 31-year-old added he will not jeopardise his career by returning to the pitch until he's certain the injury is behind him.
"Now it is very important that nothing happens to my foot," he said. "Because otherwise, my career may be at risk. We need maximum attention "
