Bayern Munich withdraw contract offer to David Alaba
Bayern Munich withdrew a contract offer to David Alaba over the weekend after the versatile defender's representatives snubbed an apparently generous five-year package with the European champions.
Unless he inks a new deal, Alaba can sign a pre-contract agreement with another club as of Jan. 1, 2021, in anticipation of joining his new employer for the 2021-22 campaign.
"We have a new situation since this weekend," Bayern president Herbert Hainer said during Sunday's BR Blickpunkt Sport show, as translated by ESPN's Stephan Uersfeld. "We submitted to David and his advisor some time ago what we think was a very good offer.
"During the last meeting, we had said we wanted clarity by the end of October. We did not hear anything until yesterday and we contacted his advisor.
"The answer was that the offer was still unsatisfactory and we should think about it again. We then decided to take the offer completely off the table. This means there is no longer an offer."
Bayern offered Alaba an annual salary of around €11 million that could potentially rise to €15 million with bonuses, ESPN reports. Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Juventus are reportedly interested in signing the 28-year-old.
Alaba, who has won the Champions League twice and collected nine Bundesliga titles and six DFB-Pokals with Bayern, expressed disappointment that updates on his contract situation were made public.
"What's next, I don't know right now. I have not made any plans for my future," he said during Monday's news conference ahead of Tuesday's Champions League tilt with RB Salzburg. "I am a player who really likes to play for Bayern. I am happy to be part of this team. Nobody official has contacted me. It's difficult to say what the future will hold in store."
He added: "I have always said that I would have wished for internal things to remain internal. It hurt and disappointed me that my position was portrayed the way it was, this was not the truth. The salary put out in media, it's not like that."
