Report: Alonso won't become Borussia Monchengladbach's next coach
Reports of Xabi Alonso becoming Borussia Monchengladbach's manager next season are false, according to Sid Lowe of The Guardian.
The Spanish World Cup winner, who is currently in charge of Real Sociedad's B team, reportedly struck a deal Tuesday to replace outgoing Gladbach manager Marco Rose, who agreed to join Borussia Dortmund next season.
But an agreement between the two sides never transpired, sources in Germany revealed to Lowe.
While Alonso's advisors discussed a possible deal with Gladbach officials after receiving an offer, Lowe reports that the former Liverpool and Real Madrid midfielder hasn't agreed to join the German club.
Borussia Monchengladbach are expected to move on from Alonso and shift attention to other coaching candidates, Lowe adds.
It's understood that Alonso, who's been approached by a number of clubs, won't rush his decision even though his contract at Real Sociedad expires this summer.
Part of the intrigue around Alonso, 39, is by virtue of the number of world-class coaches he worked with during his playing career. The Spaniard played for legendary managers such as Javier Clemente, Rafael Benitez, Jose Mourinho, Carlo Ancelotti, and Pep Guardiola.
