Women's Bundesliga TV rights see 16-fold increase from 2023
Berlin, Oct 12, 2022 (AFP) - The broadcast rights income for the women's Bundesliga will see a 16-fold increase from 2023-24 onwards, the German Football Federation (DFB) announced on Sunday.
Pursuant to the three-year deal, which will run until the 2026-27 season, broadcasters will pay €5.17 million per year, which is 16 times the current amount.
By contrast, the TV rights in England of the English Women's Super League is approximately €9.1 million.
The DFB has not yet indicated how the money will be distributed between the 12 first division clubs.
In addition to the increased financial package, a further 32 games will be shown on free-to-air television per season, while all 132 games each year will be shown on pay TV providers DAZN and MagentaSport.
Women's football has seen a surge in viewership in Germany in recent years.
The 2022 Women's Euro final between Germany and England attracted 21.8 million viewers (64.8% market share) on the ARD network, making it the most watched women's football game of all time domestically.
The German Frauen Bundesliga has existed in its current nationwide form since 1997.
Wolfsburg and Eintracht Frankfurt, formerly known as FFC Frankfurt, have won the most Bundesliga titles, with seven each.
