Edouard Mendy becomes latest player to swap Chelsea for Saudi riches
Edouard Mendy is the latest player to move to the free-spending Saudi Pro League after joining Al-Ahli.
The 31-year-old left Chelsea for the Jeddah-based club in a transfer worth up to £17 million, according to transfer insider Fabrizio Romano. Mendy's new team doesn't yet rival the star rosters at other Saudi outfits, with ex-Roma defender Bastos and former Swansea City winger Modou Barrow among the more recognizable players on Pitso Mosimane's squad.
Mendy arrived at the Blues from Rennes for around £22 million in 2020. He won both FIFA's best goalkeeper award and UEFA's distinction for Champions League Goalkeeper of the Season after his first campaign at Stamford Bridge but only started nine Premier League matches last term.
The Senegalese shot-stopper won the Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, and FIFA Club World Cup at Chelsea.
Al-Ahli are back in the top tier of Saudi football following last season's promotion. Mendy's former Chelsea teammates N'Golo Kante and Kalidou Koulibaly also moved to Saudi Arabia this summer.
