Liverpool identified Brighton & Hove Albion coach Roberto De Zerbi as a possible candidate to replace Jurgen Klopp if they fail to strike a deal with their top target, Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso, reports The Guardian's Jacob Steinberg.
Alonso, who starred for Liverpool during his playing career, is the front-runner to succeed Klopp after guiding Bayer Leverkusen to a surprise title run in Germany this season.
But Liverpool aren't the only ones circling Leverkusen, as Bayern Munich are expected to pursue Alonso after Thomas Tuchel departs in June.
Alonso could also stay, which may force Liverpool to pursue alternative plans and intensify their interest in bringing De Zerbi to Anfield.
Other possible Liverpool candidates include Sporting CP's Ruben Amorim and Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann, Steinberg adds.
De Zerbi could also attract interest from Manchester United should the Red Devils dismiss Erik ten Hag this summer.
The Italian coach's reputation has skyrocketed since he replaced Graham Potter in September 2022. The Seagulls flourished under his early guidance, finishing sixth in the Premier League and mounting a run to the FA Cup semifinals last season.
