Report: Liverpool signing Frimpong to 5-year contract
Liverpool reached an agreement with Jeremie Frimpong over a five-year contract and will activate the €35-million release clause in his Bayer Leverkusen deal, reports David Ornstein of The Athletic.
Frimpong, a dynamic wing-back who was instrumental in helping Leverkusen win the Bundesliga title in 2023-24, will undergo a medical to complete the transfer, Ornstein adds.
The 24-year-old Dutchman figures to assume the right-back role being vacated by the departing Trent Alexander-Arnold.
Alexander-Arnold, who's already announced his intention to leave his boyhood club as a free agent this summer, is expected to join Real Madrid.
Though stylistically a different player, Frimpong should provide plenty of attacking punch down the right flank at Anfield, where he'll combine with Mohamed Salah for Arne Slot's Premier League champions.
The rapid Netherlands international recorded five goals and 12 assists for Leverkusen this season.
His arrival would force him either to adjust his style of play to better fit with Liverpool's system or require Slot to tweak his midfield tactics to ensure his center-backs aren't solely responsible for covering the spaces left behind when Frimpong makes his frequent forays forward.
