Manchester United sign Wout Weghorst on loan from Burnley
Manchester United addressed their undermanned strikeforce with the surprise signing of Wout Weghorst on Friday.
The 6-foot-6 striker joined the Red Devils from Championship side Burnley on loan for the rest of the season. Weghorst spent the last six months on loan at Besiktas - where he registered eight goals and four assists over 16 Turkish Super Lig appearances - before United paid little over €2.8 million to encourage the Istanbul club to terminate that temporary deal, according to transfer insider Fabrizio Romano.
Weghorst, 30, scored twice over 20 Premier League outings as Burnley were relegated last term. He notably bagged a late brace for the Netherlands in the World Cup quarterfinals against Argentina before his country fell to the eventual tournament winner on penalties.
"Whatever happens in the next few months, I can promise to give everything to the club for as long as I am here," Weghorst told the club website.
"I thank everyone who has played a part in getting me to this stage, and now I am looking forward to meeting my new teammates and getting involved straight away."
Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag said earlier Friday that Weghorst wasn't registered in time to feature in Saturday's derby against Manchester City. With Anthony Martial a doubt through injury, Marcus Rashford could be handed a central attacking role against Pep Guardiola's side.
United have won each of their last eight competitive outings.
"I've seen United's progress under Erik ten Hag this season and can't wait to start playing my part in pushing the team towards its aims," Weghorst said.
