Burnley, Sheffield United move closer to Premier League return

London, Jan 20, 2023 (AFP) - Scott Twine's first Burnley goal maintained a five-point lead for Vincent Kompany's men at the top of the Championship after coming from behind to beat West Brom 2-1 on Friday.

Sheffield United moved 14 points clear of third-placed Watford with a 1-0 win over 10-man Hull.

Burnley have now won eight league games in a row since they were thrashed 5-2 by Sheffield United in November.

West Brom were on a six-game unbeaten run themselves as they have stormed into the playoff places under Carlos Corberan.

The Baggies went in front after just seven minutes when Darnell Furlong headed in from a corner.

But late fightbacks have been a cornerstone of Burnley's success in Kompany's first season in charge, and another comeback opened up a 19-point cushion in the automatic promotion places.

Southampton loanee Nathan Tella thrashed in the equalizer 15 minutes from time.

Twine's first season at Turf Moor has been ravaged by injury, but he got the moment of glory he craved with a brilliant free-kick on 87 minutes.

United picked up a more routine three points thanks to Daniel Jebbison's goal after just four minutes at Bramall Lane.

Benjamin Tetteh was sent off late on for Hull, who remain in 16th.
