Portsmouth dent Leeds' push for automatic promotion

Portsmouth put a dent in Leeds' bid for automatic promotion to the Premier League as the Championship leaders crashed to a shock 1-0 defeat at Fratton Park on Sunday.

After promotion rivals Sheffield United and Burnley won on Saturday to close the gap on Leeds, Colby Bishop's second-half strike delivered a blow to the Yorkshire club's hopes of a top-two finish.

A combination of poor finishing and impressive goalkeeping from Nicolas Schmid brought an end to Leeds' 17-match unbeaten league run stretching back to November.

Beaten for only the fourth time in 36 league games, Leeds are now ahead of second-placed Sheffield Utd on goal difference, with third-placed Burnley a further two points back.

Portsmouth have won four of their last five matches and are 10 points above the relegation zone, thanks in large part to the best home record in the Championship in 2025.

Leeds thought they should have had an early penalty when Matt Ritchie kicked through the back of Dan James' legs, but their appeals were in vain.

Portsmouth began to dominate as Josh Murphy twice had shots deflected just wide.

The hosts' pressure paid off in the 61st minute when Connor Ogilvie picked out Bishop, whose shot went in off the far post for his sixth goal this season.

Schmid secured the points in the closing moments when he acrobatically tipped over Sam Byram's header.
