John Deere Classic, Scottish Open betting preview

Two tournaments are on deck this week: the John Deere Classic on the PGA TOUR and the Scottish Open on the European Tour. The latter boasts a particularly strong field ahead of next week's Open Championship.

Let's quickly break each one both to give bettors some options on both sides of the pond.

John Deere Classic

The course

The favorites

Daniel Berger enters as the favorite at +1200. These are very fair odds given the strength of this week's field and the fact Berger took down another weak field at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am earlier this year at a similar number.

Brian Harman is also a reasonable option at +1600. He won at TPC Deere Run in 2014 and has placed inside the top 20 in seven of his last eight starts; his only missed cut was at the PGA Championship.

Picks

Aaron Wise (+4000)

Let's jump right into the picks.

If neither Berger nor Harman is tempting, starting a card with Aaron Wise at +4000 is a great alternative. The 25-year-old has been lights out tee-to-green for three months, gaining at least 2.3 strokes in the stat category in seven of his past eight starts. He placed ninth at the Memorial and Wells Fargo Championship, and he placed inside the top 20 at the PGA Championship over that same stretch.

Wise should be able to overpower TPC Deere Run, as he did when he posted a third-round 63 at this event in 2016. His putter only needs to be average for him to have a real chance at winning Sunday.

Patrick Rodgers (+8000)

Patrick Rodgers is next up at +8000. He's made four cuts in a row, gaining strokes off the tee in all of those events while losing strokes on approach only once over that span. He tied for 41st last week in Detroit despite losing over two shots both on and around the greens.

If he can correct those issues, Rodgers should be able to string together four solid rounds at TPC Deere Run. He was the runner-up to Bryson DeChambeau at the 2017 John Deere Classic, has made three straight cuts at the event, and logged a top-15 result in 2013.

Beau Hossler (+8500)

Beau Hossler continues to play solid golf, and those who believe he's knocking on the door of his first career win can't jump ship now. The 26-year-old has placed inside the top 25 in three straight contests, gaining at least four strokes tee-to-green in each event. Last week marked just the fifth time in his career that he gained strokes in all four categories.

Hossler's only played at the John Deere Classic once. He tied for 26th and gained nearly six strokes putting.

Scottish Open

This week's field in North Berwick, Scotland, is stacked thanks to its slot ahead of next week's major championship.

World No. 1 Jon Rahm, Xander Schauffele, Collin Morikawa, Rory McIlroy, and Justin Thomas headline the group taking on The Renaissance Club - which is hosting its third consecutive Scottish Open - for some links-golf preparation.

The favorites

Rahm is the clear favorite at +650 following his U.S. Open victory. Despite his obvious ability to win any given week, the Spaniard is a pass at such short odds.

Picks

Tyrrell Hatton (+1800)

The trio of elite Americans and McIlroy are intriguing, but Englishman Tyrrell Hatton is a better play at +1800. He has a fantastic Scottish Open track record with three top-15 results in his past four appearances, including a runner-up showing in 2016. He was also a runner-up two starts ago on the PGA TOUR and is a proven winner in Europe.

Thomas Pieters (+6500)

Thomas Pieters is the second selection at a whopping +6500. The long-hitting Belgian is trending in the right direction after placing T29 at the BMW International and T12 last week at the Irish Open. He placed T20 at The Renaissance Club in 2019 and recorded a top-six result at the Scottish Open the year prior.
