Tiger Woods shot 79-77 over two rounds at Royal Troon to tie his worst career 36-hole score in a major championship, according to the Twenty First Group's Justin Ray.

"Well, it wasn't very good," Tiger said after his Friday round. "I made a double there at 2 right out of the hopper when I needed to go the other way. Just was fighting it pretty much all day. I never really hit it close enough to make birdies and, consequently, made a lot of bogeys."

Woods' total of 156 tied his performance from the 2015 U.S. Open and put him ahead of only five players on the leaderboard when his day was over.

Despite the forgettable score, Woods, who received a standing ovation from the Scottish fans as he walked up the 18th fairway, remained positive about his progress.

"I've gotten better, even though my results really haven't shown it, but physically, I've gotten better, which is great," Tiger said. "I just need to keep progressing like that and then eventually start playing more competitively and start getting into kind of the competitive flow again."

But it'll be a while before we see Tiger tee it up again. He confirmed the next time he'll play a competitive round will be at the Hero World Challenge - the December tournament he hosts in the Bahamas. He then plans to play in the PNC Championship with his son, Charlie.

His lack of competitive reps is a large reason why he struggled in majors this season. Woods played five times this year, made one cut at the Masters, missed the cut at the three other majors, and withdrew from the Genesis Invitational.

Even though he said he wouldn't play if he didn't think he could win, Tiger admitted he was looking to catch lightning in a bottle for a week.

"I was hoping that I would find it somehow, just never did," he said. "Consequently, my results and scores were pretty high."
