Kompany withdrawn after 9 minutes as injury nightmare continues

Vincent Kompany's injury-ridden campaign went from bad to worse when the Manchester City skipper was forced to leave Wednesday's Champions League semi-final second leg against Real Madrid after just nine minutes.

Kompany sat out 25 matches this season with a recurring calf issue, and it's the third time he's lasted under 10 minutes in an outing after enforced withdrawals against Sunderland in December and Dynamo Kyiv in March.

In his stead, City's often shaky Eliaquim Mangala paired up with Nicolas Otamendi in the centre of defence with the hope of stymieing the threat of Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale, and Jese Rodriguez.

Kompany exited proceedings with the aggregate scoreline still at 0-0, although the away side had started promisingly at the Santiago Bernabeu.
