Terry's final match? 3 other stars who bowed out in unceremonious fashion

Chelsea captain John Terry picked up a red card during his team's 3-2 loss to Sunderland and, since it's his second time picking up the suspension this season, the Blues' leader will miss the remaining two games of the 2015-16 campaign.

This, coupled with rumours of a potential exit at Stamford Bridge, means Terry may have just played his final match in Chelsea blue, bringing to a close an 18-season career with the club.

Here are three other stalwarts for club or country who ended their time with their respective teams in less-than-glorious fashion:

Zinedine Zidane

When Zinedine Zidane put on the white, red, and blue shirt of France in the 2006 FIFA World Cup final, even he didn't anticipate he'd end his international career with his head bowed in shame.

Alas, one of the most iconic moments in World Cup history is also the mark of the end of Zidane's 13-year run with Les Bleus. Italy defender Marco Materazzi uttered something toward the Frenchman, who responded with a brutal headbutt to his opponent's chest.

Materazzi went down, Zidane was shown a red card and headed past the World Cup trophy toward the locker room, and Italy went on to win the tournament. It was, perhaps, the most unfitting end to the career of a player who exuded nothing but class for both club and country over two decades.

Steven Gerrard

If John Terry is an icon for Chelsea, his England teammate Steven Gerrard is doubly so for Liverpool, which he captained and bled for over 17 seasons. Gerrard was so instrumental for Liverpool that he remained a regular fixture in the Reds' lineup throughout his time at Anfield.

Gerrard made plenty of incredible memories during his time with Liverpool, including winning the Champions League in 2005 alongside his side's two FA Cups, three League Cups, and one Community Shield. So it's unfortunate that in his final game, his team suffered an embarrassing 6-1 loss to Stoke City.

The Reds were absolutely routed at the Britannia Stadium and Gerrard left the club having endured the largest defeat in his playing career. He joined the LA Galaxy soon after.

Diego Maradona

While Zidane and Gerrard suffered humiliation in their final appearances, it doesn't compare to Argentina legend Diego Maradona, whose career with the Albiceleste ended in disgrace during the 1994 FIFA World Cup in the United States.

Maradona failed a routine drug test performed during his team's group stage matches, only featuring against Greece and Nigeria before being eliminated from the tournament ahead of his team's final match against Bulgaria.

Without Maradona, Argentina finished third in the group and was sent home. Maradona never played for his country again.
