Rooney considering extending Manchester United contract
With three years still remaining on his contract, Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney is looking to extend his stay at Old Trafford.
"I have a contract at the club that I want to see out and wouldn't be against extending it - but that's up to the club," Rooney told fanzine United We Stand, according to the Manchester Evening News.
The 30-year-old, currently on duty with the England national team, has transitioned into a midfield role for both club and country. He looks at former teammate Ryan Giggs as someone who embraced change as he approached his 40s.
"All players' games develop and change over time - look at Giggsy towards the end of his career compared to the beginning," said Rooney. "I think my record shows I have always enjoyed assisting goals as much as scoring them, and I also enjoy the involvement from deeper positions."
New manager Jose Mourinho has always held Rooney in high esteem, recently calling him "England's best player for over a decade." The Portuguese attempted to sign him during his second spell at Chelsea, and the respect between the two could breed productive results on the pitch.
Alternatively, Rooney's game drooped under Louis van Gaal. He registered just eight Premier League goals last season - his lowest total since joining United in 2004.
