Elphick boasts a wealth of experience in the Championship from his days with both Bournemouth and Brighton & Hove Albion. He served as the former's captain last season, but made only 14 appearances as he was hampered by injury.
His new club paid £3 million for Elphick's services, reports Peter O'Rourke of ESPN FC.
Villa is getting set to embark on a campaign in the Championship after being relegated from the Premier League for the first time ever last season.
