Newcastle's Gayle jokes that Mitrovic tried to injure him during goal celebration
Dwight Gayle was lucky to escape injury after being the victim of Aleksandar Mitrovic's violent celebration.
Moments after scoring to secure a win for Newcastle on Wednesday, Gayle initially thought he was being attacked when he was grabbed from behind and thrown to the ground.
Luckily, the assailant was an exuberant Mitrovic, who Gayle jokingly said tried to injure him.
"He shook my head, suffocated me, and headbutted me," Gayle told reporters.
"It was like being whiplashed. I think he tried to injure me. Nah, he's a great lad and as I said, we have great team spirit. He was just as excited as we all were. Those were unbelievable scenes at the end."
Mitrovic had a tenner on 3-3 so understandably took his frustration out in Dwight Gayle 😅 https://t.co/ptUoMX0JVe
