Marco Silva named new Hull City manager

Hull City has appointed Marco Silva as the club's new manager until the end of the season.

The club confirmed that the 39-year-old will take charge of his first match Saturday when Hull hosts Swansea City during the third round of the FA Cup.

"He has a great track record and we feel this is a bold and exciting appointment in our aim to retain the Club’s Premier League status," Hull City vice-chairman Ehab Allam said. "Marco will be bringing in his own back-room team who have all played their part in his recent success.

"We are already working hard with Marco and his team to deliver some key additions to our squad during this transfer window."

Silva replaces Mike Phelan, who was relieved of his managerial duties on Tuesday after failing to register more than one win since his appointment in October.

The Portuguese manager arrives with no experience in English football, but is fresh off winning the league title with Greek side Olympiacos last season before resigning from his post.

Silva also managed in his homeland with Sporting Lisbon, where he helped the club win its first trophy in seven years.

Although he'll have a chance to end Hull's lengthy trophy drought when the club takes on Manchester United in the semifinal of the EFL Cup on Jan. 10, Silva's primary task is to avoid relegation.

The Premier League strugglers currently sit at the foot of the table with just 13 points through 20 matches.
