Manchester City's American star Carli Lloyd scored the lone goal in a 1-0 win at Lyon on Saturday, but the home side reached the Champions League final regardless courtesy of a 3-2 aggregate victory.

Lloyd's United States teammate Alex Morgan emerged from the bench at half-time to help defending champion Lyon eke out a result that sees the club reach its second consecutive final.

The French side's goalkeeper Sarah Bouhaddi played a poor pass which landed at the feet of Lloyd on 57 minutes, and when the 34-year-old rifled in the offering it put City within a chance of bagging the two unanswered strikes required to ensure progression.

The introductions of attack-minded squad members Georgia Stanway, Tessel Middag, and Nikita Parris weren't able to breach Lyon, however, meaning that no British side has reached a continental final since Arsenal beat Sweden's Umea in the old UEFA Women's Cup ten years ago.

Lyon's opponent in the final will be Paris Saint-Germain, which means the capital club's Ashley Lawrence will take on fellow Canadian Kadeisha Buchanan at the Cardiff City Stadium on June 1.
