Predicting Zlatan's next move: 3 possible destinations

Reuters

Zlatan Ibrahimovic is free to play wherever he chooses.

With his official release from Manchester United confirmed by the club Friday, speculation is only going to intensify as to where the Swedish forward will take his talents next.

Despite his advanced age, there won't be a shortage of suitors lining up offers for the 35-year-old, who proved he's capable of performing at an elite level after leading United in scoring during his first season in the Premier League.

Although he may feel he has unfinished business in England - one of the few countries where he's failed to lift a league title - it's entirely possible that Ibrahimovic, as he's proved in the past, could be eager to grace a league he's yet to conquer.

Here are three possible landing spots:

Major League Soccer

There is, perhaps, nobody better suited for Major League Soccer than the eccentric Swede.

Even without setting foot on a pitch in North America - outside of preseason duties - Ibrahimovic has become somewhat of a household name in football (or soccer) loving homes throughout the United States and Canada thanks to his outlandish style and god-given ability to dominate opponents.

Ironically, there's a case to be made that Ibrahimovic's knee injury could pave the way for a move to MLS. Given that he's not expected to return to fitness until approximately January, Ibra could essentially make a comeback in time for preseason training before the 2018 MLS season kicks off in March.

Just don't expect him to join the likes of the Columbus Crew or San Jose Earthquakes, as Ibrahimovic will undoubtedly prefer to ply his trade in a major market such as New York City or Los Angeles.

It's no secret that Italy holds a special place in Ibrahimovic's heart.

The country that he called home for almost half of his professional career, following stops at Juventus, Inter, and AC Milan, could, perhaps, be the setting for Ibrahimovic's final act.

Despite turning down an opportunity to return to AC Milan in 2015 when he was still with Paris Saint-Germain, Ibrahimovic could be persuaded once again to join the Rossoneri considering the windfall injected into the club following its takeover by a Chinese consortium.

But, in keeping with his reputation as a nomad, Ibrahimovic may be interested in a new challenge in southern Italy with Napoli. The 35-year-old gave off the impression that he's open to a move to Napoli, a destination that his agent Mino Raiola also hinted at as a possibility.

"... He's always been in love with Naples and the passion of the Neopolitans and I've always said that openly because he grew up in a family which was to the Neapolitans and then with me,” Raiola said in February.

Chinese Super League

Money shouldn't be an issue, no matter where Ibrahimovic winds up. But, if he's looking to make one more massive deposit into his bank account, high-spending Chinese Super League clubs may have a few quid they can send Ibrahimovic's way.

The standard of football, however, could be an obstacle that Ibrahimovic may struggle to overlook, especially after a season in which he banged in 17 Premier League goals.

As Chinese clubs have shown in previous transfer windows, money doesn't appear to be a concern, but it's likely not a motivator for a player such as Ibrahimovic, who has been paid handsomely throughout his illustrious career.

Perhaps there's an ingenious plan to be hatched that will see a team sign Wayne Rooney in order to use the United captain as a recruiter to boost its chances of landing Ibra. Otherwise, a move to China doesn't make sense.
