City star Sterling sets club record of 12 straight wins with 96th-minute goal

Manchester City's dominant run in the 2017-18 Premier League season has seen the team surpass another club milestone on Wednesday, with Raheem Sterling's last-gasp 96th-minute goal over Southampton giving Pep Guardiola's side a record 12th consecutive league victory.

Sterling's stunning late strike gave his team the 2-1 win at the Etihad Stadium, with Kevin De Bruyne setting up the dramatics by poking the ball toward the England international in deft fashion. Sterling then applied the finish, smashing home to secure the result and set a new club record in the process. The goal proved the difference in a match heading toward a 1-1 draw with a Virgil van Dijk own goal and an Oriol Romeu equaliser.

The goal is Sterling's fourth game-winner coming in the 84th minute or later this season, good for his ninth of the season. It gives City a haul of 40 points from the first 14 matches of the 2017-18 season, the most points gained at this point in Premier League history. At 12 wins in a row, City is now knocking on the door of the league records set by Arsenal (14) and Chelsea (13) - and the team now boasts an unbeaten streak of 27 matches in all competitions.

Manchester City's Premier League streak of 12 matches started with a 2-1 win at Bournemouth on Aug. 26 and has seen Guardiola's side pummel Liverpool 5-0, Watford 6-0, and Stoke City 7-2, while also defeating title challengers Chelsea 1-0 and Arsenal 3-1.

For those efforts, City now sits eight points clear of Manchester United at the top of the Premier League table.
