The driver who filmed Jamie Carragher spitting at him and his daughter following Manchester United's 2-1 triumph over Liverpool on Saturday reportedly did not take the matter further with police, according to BBC Sport.

The suspended pundit will therefore face no charges for the incident, and may have a route back into his job with Sky Sports. The broadcasting company said it will "discuss whether he is ready to return to his role" at the end of the season.

Carragher blamed his reaction on being "goaded three, four times along the motorway" on his way back from Old Trafford. The footage shows Carragher being reminded of the score by the driver, and the player eventually retaliating by spitting from his own vehicle and through the window of the neighbouring car. Some of the spit landed on the driver's 14-year-old daughter.

"All's I can do right now is apologise as much as I possibly can because obviously I can't go back," he said in a Sky News interview on Monday. "I've done that with the family, hopefully they accept that."

Former United full-back Gary Neville supported his Sky Sports colleague on Twitter, appreciating that Carragher had made a mistake but stating a belief that the Scouser should keep his job:

The Carragher story has been heavily debated in the United Kingdom, with the Daily Express' Michael Potts even pondering potential replacements for the ex-Liverpool defender on Sky Sports staple Monday Night Football.
