Champions League draw: PSG visit Old Trafford, Juventus meet Atletico
The round of 16 is set.
The draw for the next stage of the Champions League was held Monday, offering up a collection of fascinating encounters that will see some of Europe's marquee sides meet much earlier in the competition than they would have preferred.
Paris Saint-Germain, coasting in Ligue 1 and emerging largely unscathed from a group that included Liverpool and Napoli, will take their obscene collection of attacking talent to Old Trafford for a clash with beleaguered manager Jose Mourinho and Manchester United.
Cristiano Ronaldo, meanwhile, will enjoy a reunion of sorts after Juventus was drawn alongside Atletico Madrid; the Portuguese forward scored 22 goals in 31 matches against Atleti during his decorated spell with their bitter city rivals, Real Madrid.
The other standout fixture will see last season's finalists, Liverpool, meet Bayern Munich in a tie that promises to feature plenty of attacking action.
Elsewhere, there were favorable draws for both Manchester City and Barcelona - two of the tournament favorites - while the aforementioned Real Madrid will be wary of an upset against a young Ajax side that's arguably played the most exhilarating football of the competition thus far.
Here's the draw in full:
- Schalke vs. Manchester City
- Atletico Madrid vs. Juventus
- Manchester United vs. Paris Saint-Germain
- Tottenham vs. Borussia Dortmund
- Lyon vs. Barcelona
- AS Roma vs. FC Porto
- Ajax vs. Real Madrid
- Liverpool vs. Bayern Munich
The round of 16 begins Feb. 12 with the second leg of each tie slated for March.
