Gomes to undergo surgery on fractured right ankle
Everton confirmed Andre Gomes will undergo surgery on Monday to repair a serious ankle injury suffered during Sunday's match against Tottenham.
The club added that tests revealed he suffered a "fracture dislocation to his right ankle."
"Andre was stretchered from the pitch during the second half of the game and taken straight to Aintree Hospital by ambulance accompanied by members of the Everton medical team," a statement from Everton read. "After undergoing hospital tests, it was confirmed he had suffered a fracture dislocation to his right ankle."
The gruesome injury occurred in the 79th minute of the match - which ended 1-1 at Goodison Park - when Tottenham forward Heung-min Son tackled Gomes from behind, and the midfielder landed awkwardly on the turf after colliding with defender Serge Aurier.
As medical personnel tended to Gomes on the pitch, players around him were visibly distraught.
An emotional Son, who was on the verge of tears and teammates had to console him, was shown a straight red card for the challenge.
