Manchester United's trip to Brentford postponed after COVID-19 outbreak
The Premier League has postponed Tuesday's meeting between Brentford and Manchester United after the latter closed their training complex due to an ongoing COVID-19 outbreak.
"Given (the) cancellation of training and disruption to the squad, and with the health of players and staff the priority, the club requested the match to be rearranged," read a United statement. "The Premier League Board took the decision to postpone based on guidance from medical advisors."
Brentford said they expect to host the rescheduled game "in the new year."
Tottenham Hotspur's match at Brighton & Hove Albion on Sunday was called off due to 13 cases in Spurs' camp. The Premier League reported 42 new cases Monday, a record number since weekly tests began in May 2020.
Leicester City were missing seven players due to positive COVID-19 tests or other illnesses for Thursday's 3-2 defeat to Napoli in the Europa League. They fulfilled their next fixture against Newcastle United on Sunday, logging a commanding 4-0 victory.
The Premier League reintroduced "emergency measures" last Friday as the Omicron variant sparks a surge in England's coronavirus cases. The competition says these include "more frequent testing, wearing face coverings while indoors, observing social distancing and limiting treatment time."
