Barcelona moved quickly to get ahead of Bayern Munich in the race to sign Anthony Gordon on Wednesday.

The Newcastle United attacker plans to fly to Barcelona on Thursday for medical tests and to sign a contract after the two clubs agreed to an overall package that could exceed €80 million, reports transfer insider Fabrizio Romano.

Newcastle will reportedly receive an initial €70 million before add-ons, Romano adds.

Bayern Munich appeared to be in the strongest position to sign Gordon for months. Newcastle received offers from both Barcelona and Bayern Munich on Wednesday, but the latter club backed out of talks after failing to match the offer from Catalonia, according to Lee Ryder of local Tyneside publication the Chronicle.

Gordon's weekly salary will double to around £300,000 per week, Ryder reports.

The 25-year-old has regularly been subject of transfer speculation since moving to Newcastle from Everton in 2023. He admitted he struggled to accept the breakdown of a move to Liverpool in the summer of 2024. That potential switch was worth around £75 million and would've involved defender Joe Gomez moving the other way to Newcastle, The Athletic's David Ornstein reports.

Gordon has scored 24 goals and provided 17 assists over 111 Premier League appearances for Newcastle. He notably scored 10 times in the current Champions League campaign, although four of those goals came in a lopsided win over Azerbaijan's Qarabag.

Gordon will travel to represent England at this summer's World Cup. He joins a squad that includes Marcus Rashford, the Manchester United attacker who spent the 2025-26 campaign on loan at Barcelona. The Spanish giants have until June 15 to trigger their €30-million option to buy Rashford, and it now seems unlikely that they will do so, according to The Athletic's Laurie Whitwell.
