Poyet concerned by Fletcher injury
All is well for Sunderland at the moment, but manager Gus Poyet has admitted his concerns regarding the health of striker Steven Fletcher.
Fletcher missed Saturday's 3-0 win over Newcastle due to a Achilles injury that has plagued the Scottish international for several weeks.
Poyet told the Sunderland Echo the club is debating the next step, with surgery providing the most feared option.
“We’ll have to look at the games ahead and the chance of rest in between, but we’ll need to make a strong decision," Poyet said.
Fletcher missed the start of the season with an ankle injury and has scored just three goals this season.
Sheffield Wednesday’s attempts to secure Sunderland forward Connor Wickham on emergency loan have taken a hit as a result of Fletcher's injury. Poyet indicated the Black Cats will need the England under-21 to remain in the squad for depth purposes.
“It probably makes it more likely that Connor will stay for longer,” Poyet stated. “Connor has got plenty of admirers, you can’t imagine how many."
