Lallana, who completed his move from Southampton to Liverpool earlier this month, sustained a knock to his lateral collateral ligament during a training session at the Merseyside club's Harvard University training base in Boston.
No surgery is required, but there is no specific timeline for the 26-year-old's recovery. The injury can result in up to six weeks on the sidelines, meaning Lallana's Liverpool debut will obviously be delayed. He'll undergo further assessment by his new club's medical team in the United States, as well as back in Liverpool.
The 2013-14 Premier League season saw Lallana register nine goals and six assists in 37 appearances for Southampton, earning him a spot on the England squad that crashed out of the World Cup in the group stage.
