VIDEO: Wayne Rooney shown straight red for foolish tackle vs. West Ham
Reuters
It was all going so well for Wayne Rooney.
A goal in the first half against West Ham took him to 176 in his Premier League career, surpassing Thierry Henry for third on the league's all-time scoring list.
But with the Red Devils up 2-1 midway through the second half, the captain lost his head and committed an awful challenge on Stewart Downing. Some players have an uncanny ability to get away with cynical fouls. Rooney is not one of them, judging by this hack job.
This will only embolden those who believe the 28-year-old deserves a place on Louis van Gaal's bench.
